Join Studio A Capella

Studio A Capella is a fun and lively group of girls who enjoy the learning challenging new music,
singing, and performing together

About

Directed by Dona Maher, this is a lively group of singers in Grades 9-12. The girls in this group love singing, performing, and taking on challenging performance opportunities. Rehearsals are held at The James Library & Center for the Arts in Norwell. The group represents many South Shore communities including Norwell, Hanover, Hingham, Hull, Cohasset, Scituate, and Marshfield.

What to Expect

With the A Capella group, we focus on basic and advanced vocal skills, breathing, diction, singing in parts, and musical interpretation. Nurturing respect and camaraderie as a group is also emphasized. Special attention is placed on performance techniques, poise and stage presence. Rehearsals require each singer’s full attention, a positive and energetic focus, and a desire to reach for one’s personal best within the group. Some “at home” practicing of parts is required and vocalists should have a strong sense of rhythm, intonation, and vocal flexibility as we build rapport, sound, and character. Simple choreography is incorporated when appropriate.

Performances

The Dona Maher Studio A Cappella performs throughout the year. Some of the local events where we perform are:
• Friendship Home Follies, Gala, and the Club Holiday Parties
• Norwell’s Holiday on the Common at the Cushing Center
• Norwell SummerFest
• Holiday and Spring Recitals
• Village at Duxbury
• The group also performed the National Anthem at Fenway Park in 2017
• Opportunity to participate in the The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music exams.

Requirements

All Studio A Capella members must attend the weekly rehearsals, held every Sunday afternoon from 2:00 - 3:30 pm at The James Library & Center for the Arts. Each session includes multiple performance opportunities, community outreach, and the opportunity to be adjudicated by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

How to Participate

New members are warmly welcomed and there is no cut-off for enrollments. Some previous experience in choral singing, private lessons, or musical theater is preferred and a simple audition is required.

Dona is a loving mentor. She and my child spend time talking about life and values, and I appreciate that there is another trustworthy adult in my child’s life to help her navigate her way through growing up and being in the world.

Dona is an amazing teacher. Between her musical skills, positive attitude and encouragement, I have grown so much as a musician.
