Dona Maher Studio Newsletter Vol. 3 No. 3: Virtual Summer Recital!

Happy Labor Day, Studio Musicians and Families!

From the Dona Maher Music Studio, we hope you are all healthy, safe, and relaxing as the sun is out and this “new normal” is still pretty crazy! As I move into my senior year of high school, I know how challenging virtual classes and schoolwork have been, but hard work pays off both educationally and musically. Many of you have been practicing and having virtual lessons with Dona, and we could not begin the Fall/Winter Semester without showcasing these beautiful pieces. So, below we have a collection of videos of students performing their planned Spring Recital pieces, as well as pieces they have learned throughout the summer. I know that it is not the same as gathering in the beautiful performance hall at the James, but we promise this music is just as beautiful through a screen. From the Dona Maher Studio, we hope the end of your summer is filled with relaxation and good music, starting with our virtual recital today!

Dona Maher Studio Newsletter Vol. 3 No. 2

Happy (official) Spring, Studio families! I hope this newsletter finds you all happy, healthy and safe. I wanted to reach out during this confusing, dark time and provide a little bit of sunshine in the form of music. In my daily routine at home, music has played a huge role in keeping my family and me entertained and happy. However, I know that despite our inability to have face-to-face lessons each week, you guys have been doing some amazing work whether it’s virtually with Dona, or on your own. This newsletter is going to contain some highlights of what has been going on at all of our homes, and just simply some good music for you! I sent out an email requesting pictures and videos for what you have been up to, and I received some great submissions. That offer still stands! Please share anything you want to Dona.maher77@gmail.com (Sofia’s email) and I would love to include you in this newsletter!

I also want to mention our gratitude for the Studio parents and their cooperation with setting up Skype lessons. Your willingness to compromise under difficult conditions allows students to continue to make beautiful music. Students- thank YOU for continuing to always wow us and working hard no matter what. Your manners, enthusiasm and positivity is truly a blessing to this Studio. As Debasish Mridha once said, “Music can heal the wounds that medicine cannot touch.”

We miss you all.

-Sofia Clifford, editor in chief

(with love from Dona, too)

A Capella: Making bonds and creating memories (virtually)!

Coming from a longtime member from A Capella, this season’s group is so connected and creating such strong bonds. While we cannot see each other once or twice a week per usual, we are creating group video chats, and discussing our lives at home and our favorite music! Our music for the Spring semester is quite challenging, and we need to keep rehearsing and practicing, despite our inability to all be together.

Here are a few other songs we have been loving as a group!

This group of girls can go from singing Mariah Carey to Armenian hymns in a matter of minutes- all with a smile on their faces!! If you are interested in auditioning, please contact Dona! All contact info is at the top of this page, in the right column.

A Capella stays late for rehearsal knowing there was pizza waiting downstairs…Dona works them hard but it is (clearly) ALWAYS worth it! Special thank you to Anthony DeMatteo at Blue Moon Pizzeria in Norwell center for donating delicious pizza and food to our hardworking singers!!

IMG_2576.jpeg

For our younger singers, we have the Studio Chorus! Ranging from grades 3 through 8, these girls sing a wide variety of choral pieces, including many different genres. As you can see in the pictures, these girls from over seven South Shore communities have a close, special bond, and love to create beautiful music together! Once again, contact Dona for details! Create new friends, new music, and learn something new every week about choral singing and music!

Community Reach-out: Friendship Home

One of the most amazing things about music is the way it brings so many different people together. Every year for the past eight years, the Studio Chorus and A Capella look forward to a night full of singing, dancing, and some of the most precious and beautiful holiday memories. The Friendship Home in Norwell is a overnight and daytime activity center for individuals of a variety of ages with disabilities, and is full of cordial people who advocate and care for them. They are the most welcoming, participant audience to sing for, and this event is by far the most exciting concert of the season. Here are a few highlights of the group!

Lots of carols! Our favorite!

HUGE congratulations to all the solo performers, and the amount of hard work and improvement we have seen this season. Big things to come in 2020, and as always- even better music!

Talented soloists Megan Johnson and Julia Yacovone congratulate one another on a job well done!

This week for Noteworthy News, we decided to interview student Nidhi Bellur, who is involved in traditional Indian dance called Bharatanatyam.

1.jpeg

When Did Nidhi start dancing?

Nidhi started dancing about two years ago.

What is the cultural significance of the dance?

The Indian dance form Nidhi is learning is called “Bharatanatyam” . It is an ancient form of classical dance form that has been passed on for generations in a southern part of India from where her family comes from. She started exploring this dance form with the encouragement from her parents to get a taste of the rich and vibrant culture of India.

Do any other family members participate?

She was attracted to this dance form because of her aunt who is an avid dancer.

What is the origin of the dancing?

Bharatanatyam is the oldest classical dance tradition in India. It has been believed to have existed since 2nd century CE. This dance form tells about Hindu mythology and ancient stories . Her family thought it was a fun way to learn about those stories was through dance. They are very glad she has enjoyed learning this and plans on continuing this as long as she can.

We also interviewed longtime student Rachel Warhaftig, who has shared her experiences with Handel and Haydn, the oldest vocal and orchestral organization in the country.

1-1.jpeg

What is the Handel and Haydn society?

Handel and Haydn Society is a vocal and orchestral organization, the oldest in the country, that is based out of Boston. I participate in the Youth Vocal Arts Program as a member of both Young Women’s Chorus and Young Women’s Chamber Chorus, along with 70 high school girls from the Boston area.

How did you get involved?

I got involved in Handel and Haydn because the conductor of the group conducted the Southeastern Junior Districts ensemble when I was in 7th grade. She recommended that I look into the program with my family.

Are there any big events coming up that you are involved in?

This coming spring, Young Women’s Chamber Chorus and Young Men’s Chorus will be performing the Mozart Requiem at Symphony Hall along with the professional Handel and Haydn Society Chorus.

All Studio Chorus and A Capella girls, please access Dona’s YouTube channel to find your specific practice parts!

2018-19 Concert Series at The James

The James Library & Center for the Arts celebrates the 2018-19 concert season with an outstanding and diverse combination of classical, jazz, and Celtic performances.  This year’s concert calendar will also include two “free” Sunday afternoon classical performances as we launch the “Weekend Classics Encore” series.  We’re supporting the “Music for Food” initiative to fight hunger in our local communities and celebrating the inception of our concert series as 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the purchase of the Steinway piano and the start of music programming at the James!

Calyx Trio

Sunday, October 21st at 3:00

“Weekend Classics” kicks off the season with this exquisite piano trio featuring a program of female composers, some from this area, which they will showcase in the concert.  Elegant reception following.

Meadowlark Trio

New England Conservatory Artist Fellows representing “Music for Food”

Sunday, November 11th at 3:00

The first of two free “Weekend Classics Encore” series performances.  These gifted musicians were chosen to represent “Music for Food” this season as they perform for free asking audience members to make donations, in lieu of purchasing tickets, that will be donated to a South Shore food pantry of our choosing.   I was considering Interfaith Social Services in Quincy whose outreach focuses on hunger, mental health and emergency assistance.  Music for Food is a musician-led initiative to fight hunger in our local communities.  Performances transform music into food, nourishing ears and bodies.  Now embarking on its 8th season in Boston, Music for Food was founded by Grammy award winning violist Kim Kashkashian in 2010.

Tim Ray Trio

Saturday, December 8th at 7:30 pm

Jazz pianist extraordinaire, Tim Ray has appeared on over 80 recordings and has performed with an extensive list of pop music icons, including Aretha Franklin, Lyle Lovett, and Tony Bennett and with special appearances with the Boston Pops.  He’ll be joined by John Lockwood on bass and drummer Mark Walker.  Classic jazz at its finest!  Currently on the faculty of the Berklee College of Music.

Victor Cayres and Heeyeon Chi

Piano Duo

Sunday, January 27th at 3:00

Brazilian pianist Victor Cayres has been hailed as having the “spirit of a leader”.  Winner of numerous national and international prizes and has appeared as soloist with symphony orchestras around the world.  Victor is on the faculty of the New England Conservatory Prep, Boston University School of Music and is the Associate Director for the Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Piano Program.  Joining Victor at the piano is Heeyeon Chi, who has performed worldwide as a soloist and has also received numerous awards and prizes in competitions spanning the globe.  They are a husband and wife “piano power couple”!  Heeyeon is also on the faculty of the New England Conservatory Prep.

Winifred Horan and Friends

Saturday, March 9th at 7:30 pm

Celebrating Celtic music with us again this season, Winifred invites Colleen Raney, on vocals and bohdran, Hans Araki-Campbell on flute, tin whistle and vocals and several guests to round out a quintet with guitar and concertina/accordion as we celebrate the Month of March with a traditional “Celtic Session”!

Eleanor Perrone

Sunday, April 7th at 3:00

Our second free “Weekend Classics Encore” series performance.  Pianist Eleanor Perrone’s commitment to the music she is playing is conveyed to the audience with electric energy and technical audacity.  As stated by the Boston Globe, “Perrone is a pianist who makes you listen.”  Trained at the Juilliard School and Boston University, former piano faculty of the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA and is on the piano faculty of the Rivers School Conservatory in Weston, MA.
